Chapter 5: The Cold Wind Blows
Chapter 5: The Cold Wind Blows
Ping An Building is a huge project. More than half of the floors are occupied by workers, with a total of nearly a thousand people. The terror on the rooftop is spreading, but the other floors are eerily quiet.
The rooftop was the last floor and the last to be affected. When the terrorist incident occurred on the rooftop, the other floors had already experienced similar events. It took about an hour from the basement to the rooftop.
The thick gray fog, seemingly not yet satisfied, has spread beyond the construction site, engulfing several surrounding streets within minutes. Similar horrific events continue to unfold elsewhere.
Li Yao stood in front of the glass window, looking at the thick gray fog outside, and felt inexplicably uneasy.
"This fog is really strange. It came so suddenly, without any warning from the weather forecast. It's been over an hour and there's no sign of it dissipating. In fact, it's getting worse."
At first, Li Yao thought there was a fire at the construction site across the street, but then the entire site was shrouded in thick fog that lasted for more than an hour and was now spreading in this direction, which made her even more puzzled.
dong dong dong~
A knock on the door interrupted Li Yao's thoughts. Li Yao came back to her senses and frowned as she looked at the half-open door.
"Secretary Li, the chairman wants to see you. He needs to talk to you about something."
At the door stood a well-dressed, refined-looking, and somewhat shy young man. His voice was soft and polite, just like his behavior; even though the door was open, he still followed the rules by knocking before speaking.
"Um!"
Li Yao gave a cold reply, didn't even glance at the other person, and left the office.
The shy young man was a little embarrassed to look at Li Yao openly. Only after Li Yao had passed by did he dare to stare at her back, his eyes glued to her. But there was no offensive desire in his eyes, only extreme longing and admiration.
As if sensing something, Li Yao suddenly turned around and met his adoring gaze, which startled him so much that he blushed and immediately turned his head away.
Li Yao's expression grew even colder, and she muttered to herself, "You spineless simp, all lust and no guts. You're always like this, it's never going to end. You're so annoying."
Li Yao glanced coldly at the shy young man, turned around, pushed open the door to the chairman's office, and then closed and locked the door with practiced ease.
The moment she entered, Li Yao seemed like a completely different person. Her entire demeanor changed; the aloofness that once kept people at arm's length was gone, replaced by a gentle smile. Her watery eyes were filled with tenderness, and her whole aura became gentle and refined, radiating a unique attraction like a magnetic field.
"My little darling! You're here! I've missed you so much! Come here quickly."
A greasy, middle-aged man with a large belly sat on the sofa and waved to Li Yao.
Li Yao tossed her not-too-messy hair, gave the other person a flirty wink, and then turned her gaze to the other side. At the other end of the sofa sat a man with slicked-back hair and half-rimmed glasses.
"Uncle, Li Yao is my secretary, after all. It's not right for you to always beat me to it!"
The bespectacled man complained, but his eyes showed only indifference, seemingly without the slightest dissatisfaction.
The greasy man glared at him irritably, then looked at Li Yao with burning eyes.
"With such a beautiful and capable secretary like Li Yao, if it weren't for the heavy burden at head office, I would have traded my position as chairman for your position as general manager. You should be secretly happy! I rarely come here, so please give way!"
"My little Yao Yao, come here and let me feel the breeze!"
The urgency in the greasy man's eyes was very obvious, anyone could see it. Li Yao did not hesitate at all. She walked gracefully to the greasy man, gently kissed his lips deeply, and then knelt down skillfully.
The shy man outside the door stared at the closed office door, and the image of Li Yao involuntarily came to mind.
"So beautiful, but it's a pity she's a bit aloof. It would be even better if she were a little gentler."
The shy man muttered to himself, reminiscing about the goddess he had been longing for, completely unaware of the changes around him.
By this time, the gray fog had seeped into the building, and their floor had also become shrouded in mist.
The shy man returned to his workstation, ready to continue his previous work, but saw his other colleagues all peering out the window, wondering what they were looking at. Out of curiosity, he went over to see what was going on.
Actually, there was nothing lively outside the window. All I could see was a hazy blur, with visibility less than five meters, and I could hardly see anything at all.
The world outside the window seemed a bit noisy, with shouts and cries for help faintly audible.
"Zhang and you, what are you looking at? What's happening outside?"
Zhang He was his college classmate, and the two had always been very close. It was through his connections that Zhang He got into the company, and the two had always supported each other and were the people they trusted most.
"Amin, something seems wrong outside. There have been screams and cries for help for about an hour now. I don't know what's going on, whether it's a multi-vehicle collision or some kind of crime."
Looks like I'll have to order takeout for lunch. I'm too lazy to go downstairs; I don't want to run into any trouble.
Hearing Zhang He's explanation, Amin nodded thoughtfully, agreeing with the view. Since he often ordered takeout anyway, he figured he shouldn't go out and wander around in this unusual weather.
The fog around them grew thicker and thicker, and within minutes, the entire office was shrouded in mist. At this point, everyone snapped out of their fascination with the spectacle.
"What's going on? Why is there such a thick fog in the building? That doesn't make sense! There shouldn't be this much fog in the building with glass partitions."
This unusual phenomenon easily made people feel that something was wrong, but no reasonable explanation could be given, so everyone returned to their workstations to slack off.
Many people have returned to their jobs, but their minds haven't returned. They are still curious about what's happening outside, and some are taking the opportunity to slack off and secretly do things that interest them.
Even the usually hardworking Amin has started to slack off, as he feels his admiration for Li Yao is growing stronger and stronger. He can hardly control himself and can't help but think of her, often getting distracted at work.
The rare moment of leisure didn't last long. After a few minutes, a series of dull, slow footsteps began to sound around them, the temperature seemed to drop a few degrees unnaturally, and a strong stench filled the air.
Tap tap tap...
A slow, muffled sound of footsteps suddenly echoed in the otherwise quiet office lobby.
The footsteps came suddenly, but no one thought anything was wrong. The employees who were slacking off suddenly became much more obedient, thinking that the boss had arrived.
But gradually they also realized that something seemed wrong. The footsteps were getting closer and closer to them, but they could only hear the footsteps and could not see the people.
Footsteps lingered around them, as if an unseen person were walking back and forth behind them.
"Strange, there's no one here, so where did those footsteps come from?"
Unable to resist his curiosity, a bold young man got up and walked toward the source of the footsteps, but before he had taken a few steps, he suddenly felt a chill on the back of his neck.
"Where did this cold wind come from out of nowhere?"
The young man reached out and rubbed the back of his neck, but immediately he felt something strange on the back of his hand. A breeze was blowing intermittently on the back of his hand, which felt a bit like human breath, but the breath was unusually cold.
The young man couldn't help but reach behind him and touch something, but he had only stretched out less than ten centimeters when his fingertips touched an unidentified object. It was cold, hard, and seemed to have some kind of liquid on its surface, sticky and gooey.
He instinctively turned around to see what was behind him, but as soon as he turned around, he saw a headless corpse standing behind him, almost touching his back.
He was so frightened that he couldn't speak. His eyes widened in terror as he stared at the horrifying thing behind him. Then, the world spun around him, and he fell straight to the ground.
At first, the people around didn't pay attention, but when they saw the young man suddenly fall to the ground and not move, they were all stunned and didn't understand what had happened. They didn't understand how a perfectly healthy person could just fall down like that.
"Could this kid have caught some kind of illness? He was perfectly fine all of a sudden, could he be dead? Should we call an ambulance for him?"
Zhang He looked blankly at the young man lying next to him, slowly slid his chair over to the young man, and gently poked him twice with his finger.
There was no movement.
At the same time, he also felt that the young man's body felt a little off; it was stiff, hard, and also a little cold.
He reached out to check the young man's breath and found that the young man was not breathing. He was immediately startled and quickly stepped back.
"Holy crap, he's dead! Ah Ming, call the police right now, something's happened, this kid's dead."
Zhang He's panicked appearance made everyone realize that he might not be joking, and many of his bolder colleagues got up and gathered around to find out what was going on.
It was finally confirmed that the young man was indeed dead, just like that, suddenly and inexplicably, and his body was stiff as a board.
The sudden death of a colleague brought everyone to a standstill. Some started calling the police to come quickly, while others prepared to call the general manager next door.
But at that moment, the stiff corpse on the ground suddenly moved, and its joints began to twist strangely.
"Holy crap! It's...it's come back to life!"
Zhang pointed at the corpse on the ground in horror, while taking a deep, repeated retreat, almost falling into the arms of his female colleague.
The others, witnessing this bizarre scene, were bewildered. They didn't believe in supernatural phenomena and assumed the young man wasn't quite dead yet, so they gathered around to observe.
"I suddenly feel a bit creepy, and the back of my head feels cold."
A slightly overweight female office worker, still feeling a bit scared, held her best friend's hand and muttered softly.
Her best friend assumed she was just timid and a little scared, and didn't take it seriously, while also jokingly saying:
"Your head feels so cold, you're probably starting to get a brain!"
