Chapter 598 Enemy Troop Movements
Chapter 598 Enemy Troop Movements
She paused for a few seconds, her gaze lingering on the map for a moment, before making a decision.
"Have the quartermaster allocate a batch of supplies to the barbarian camp. Enclose a letter of mine—don't mention an alliance, just say that the Northern Alliance is willing to share intelligence on the Ironclad Den. The purpose is to let them know that when trouble comes, the orcs aren't the only option. They don't need to be grateful, just that they hesitate a bit more when making decisions."
Colin nodded in acceptance and turned to leave the council chamber.
The sound of footsteps gradually faded away in the corridor.
Lin Tian received the experience settlement for the reconnaissance mission.
My experience bar has increased a little, and I'm still a ways from level 74, but at my current monster-killing speed, it'll only take a few high-intensity battles.
He mentally estimated that if the Ironclad Beast Den mission was assigned to him next, he should be able to reach level 74 by the end of the mission.
He sat down at the preparation table and began to organize today's reconnaissance data.
Fang Ping pushed open the door and handed him a pot of hot tea. The teapot was one of those new tin cans issued by the quartermaster; it was quite rough on the outside, but it kept the tea warm very well.
"I heard you sneaked into the barbarian camp alone, listened to their chieftain's battle meeting, and then escaped unscathed from an encirclement of more than thirty elite warriors?"
Fang Ping sat down opposite him, took a sip of tea, then frowned, clearly finding it too bitter.
"In all my years in the army, reconnaissance missions usually involve finding a high point, taking a quick look from afar, and then coming back. You, on the other hand, sat right next to someone's tent and listened. Did you find it exciting?"
Lin Tian took the teapot and took a sip. The tea was a standard ration from the quartermaster department; it tasted very bitter, but left a sweet aftertaste.
He didn't respond to Fang Ping's words, but simply closed the tactics manual and leaned back in his chair to catch his breath.
Fang Ping put down the teapot and said seriously:
"Colin asked me to inform you to report to the eastern watchtower first thing tomorrow morning. The Allied forces may send a reconnaissance team to investigate the Ironclad Beast Den. The barbarians won't participate in the war for now, but if the trouble at their doorstep isn't handled properly, it will eventually spread to our side. At that point, it won't just be a matter for the barbarians alone; the entire eastern defense line will be shaken."
"Understood," Lin Tian said. He picked up the teapot and took another sip, his gaze falling on the darkening sky outside the window.
Tomorrow's tasks don't look any easier than today's.
......
Lin Tian had just come out of the equipment preparation room when hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.
"Lin Tian, the city lord wants you to go to the council hall immediately." The messenger was out of breath as he ran. "Urgent military news."
Lin Tian nodded, stuffed the few sets of recovery potions he had just received into his backpack, and strode towards the council hall.
The council chamber was already full of people.
Qin Zhi stood at the head of the long table, with Colin sitting to her right. Several garrison captains surrounded the map projection on both sides, each with a tense expression.
Fang Ping leaned against the pillar by the door and saw Lin Tian come in. He gave him a wink, meaning that things were not looking good.
Lin Tian walked to the end of the long table and stood in the corner.
His current identity is an independent action member directly under the Allied Forces Headquarters. He is considered an unofficial member in Juxia City, but Qin Zhi always invites him to military meetings.
"Everyone's here." Qin Zhi raised her hand and turned on the map projection.
A topographical map of the area surrounding the Great Gorge City was unfolded above the long table, with two clusters of red dots marked on the north and east sides respectively.
The density of the light spots in the north was significantly higher than yesterday, while the light spots in the east were slowly moving westward.
"The first batch of intelligence sent back from the No. 3 watchtower on the east side at 5:00 AM."
Qin Zhi pointed her finger at the area to the north. "The remnants of the beastmen have regrouped in the direction directly north of Juxia City, and their current size is about two thousand."
Two thousand people.
Fang Ping whistled. After Lin Tian destroyed the totem poles during the last orc siege, several orc tribes on the northern front were scattered, but they reorganized so quickly.
"That's not all." Qin Zhi's finger moved to the east side. "The intelligence sent back from the No. 1 watchtower on the east side at seven o'clock this morning: the barbarian camp reinforced its troops overnight, and currently has about eight hundred men, and they are still increasing."
The council chamber fell silent for a second.
Colin frowned: "Two thousand orcs, eight hundred barbarians, that's two thousand eight hundred in total. The maximum number of mobile combat troops in Giant Gorge City is only twelve hundred. If both sides launch an attack simultaneously, the city's defenses will be under immense pressure."
"It's not a matter of timing," Qin Zhi said. "It's a matter of checks and balances."
She zoomed in on the map projection by one time and marked a red supply line behind the Great Gorge City.
"There is no formal alliance between the Orcs and the Barbarians, but their timing is too perfect—the Orcs are gathering in the north, and the Barbarians are advancing in the east, blocking both sides of Great Gorge City. If we split our forces to defend, we will only have six hundred men in each direction, which will put us at a disadvantage against either side. If we don't split our forces, the other side will directly threaten our supply lines."
A garrison captain stood up: "Then what do we do? Hold out?"
"To hold out is to wait for death," Colin said coldly. "With our supply lines cut off, Great Canyon City won't last seven days."
The council chamber fell silent again.
Lin Tian leaned against the wall, looking at the two red dots on the map projection.
On his system panel, a new message appeared in the taskbar: [Urgent Military Situation: Juxia City is facing a pincer attack. Please assist in the defense.]
He didn't rush to speak.
Qin Zhi's gaze swept over everyone present, finally landing on Lin Tian: "Lin Tian, what's your opinion?"
Everyone turned to look at him.
Fang Ping raised an eyebrow slightly at the door. Lin Tian had been at the forefront of every battle since arriving in Juxia City, but he had never spoken at a military conference.
Lin Tian took two steps forward and stood next to the map projection.
"It's better to concentrate your forces and strike hard on one side than to divide your troops for defense."
Colin looked at him: "Be specific."
"Two thousand orcs and eight hundred barbarians," Lin Tian pointed on the map. "It seems the orcs have more troops, but their forces are regrouped remnants, their morale is low, and their command structure hasn't fully recovered. Although the barbarians are fewer in number, their individual warriors are more powerful than the orcs, and they have already established a foothold on the eastern front."
He paused. "Strike the snake at its vital point. If I were the enemy commander, I would use the barbarians to distract the Great Gorge City and use the orcs to attack the supply lines. But think about it the other way around—if we concentrate our forces to completely crush the orcs first, would the barbarians dare to attack alone after seeing the orcs' defeat?"
Colin's eyes lit up.
Qin Zhi didn't speak, but she tapped her fingers lightly twice on the map—a habitual gesture when she was thinking.
"The orcs' assembly point is in the abandoned mine thirty miles to the north," Lin Tian continued. "Their forces are still arriving one after another. It's better to wait until they've fully assembled before attacking. Strike first, destroy their command center, and the remaining scattered troops will be a disorganized mess."
