Chapter 261: Mist

“The fuck!” Fatty grumbled, “Why are there so many cunning people in the missions? Is it a holiday at the orphanage?”

Jiang Cheng tutted. He studied Fatty. He felt like Fatty was not as obedient as before. His words carried a double meaning. Thankfully, Jiang Cheng only stared at him for a few seconds before moving to sit down beside Xia Meng. He glanced at Xia Meng’s glass before pouring himself a glass of water.

This room just didn’t feel right. It was never a bad thing to be careful. The best solution was to do the things that someone else had already done. An example would be drinking the water after someone else had done that and was fine. Xia Meng drank from the teacup, and she was fine. He and Fatty saw it.

As if reading his mind, Xia Meng shot him a side-eye. After quenching his thirst, Jiang Cheng purposely walked around the table and gloatingly took out the clues newspaper before Xia Meng. He narrowed his eyes and said mockingly, “Let me see what is written here...”

Before he could open the paper, Xia Meng shot up and stopped him. “Are you an idiot? Why are you doing that now?” Even though she was not loud, it was clear that she was holding back, or else she’d be harsher. Thankfully, the newspaper was of good quality. If it were a normal paper, Xia Meng’s action would have torn it apart.

Jiang Cheng blinked and looked at her dumbly. He was waiting for her explanation.

“Does the timing even matter?” Fatty was also confused. He pressed his lips. He hadn’t even gotten the time to drink before he shuddered, and the water splashed on him. The Doctor was the source of his information about the nightmare. He only knew that the newspaper had clues about the mission and that the articles in the newspaper would only be revealed when the travellers were in the nightmare realm.

After realising Fatty and Jiang Cheng were not acting, Xia Meng sighed and glared at Jiang Cheng, who almost ruined the whole thing. She slowly sat back down. Of course, the newspaper returned to its original owner.

“The later you reveal the paper, the bigger the reward,” She said succinctly.

Several seconds later...

“In other words, the clues in there are not fixed. The later you read them..., the more clues you’ll get?!” Fatty seemed to understand something. “Is that it?”

The group stayed away from the windows and door as they waited patiently. Soon, a soft sound entered Fatty’s ears. He barely heard it at first. Then, his pupils trembled as if he realised something. Just as he turned to tell the Doctor, a hand shot past his shoulder to clamp over his mouth, “I heard it too.” A whisper travelled into his ears. That was the Doctor.

The Doctor didn’t choose to place the limited candles around them. He placed two of them behind the door and the other two beside the window. The door and window were lit up. The Doctor held the last candle but he didn’t seem like he had the intention to light it up.

Even though the three of them stayed close to each other, Fatty could barely see their faces. There were only silhouettes. They looked scary.

The sound they heard was Chinese Opera. It came from the direction of the lake. It was melancholic and creepy. Fatty scanned his brain and frowned. He believed he had heard this voice before. Then, his face paled. He remembered it. It was from when the Doctor watched the horror film and fell asleep. The ghost in that movie sang like this too. The ghost’s name was Chu Renmei. Fatty started to shake when he thought about the ghost at the bottom of the lake. He refused to believe in coincidences.

An old manor, in the nightmake, lakeside, sound of opera and mist... These were combinations for a good horror film.

Fatty covered his ears, but it was pointless. The sound pierced through his palm and echoed in his brain.

Just as Fatty was about to give up, the sound faded away. Soon, everything returned to silence. Jiang Cheng’s group didn’t stand up immediately. They waited for a while first. When Fatty stood up, his legs were numb. He could barely stand. He didn’t dare to speak because he hadn’t heard Jiang Cheng or Xia Meng speak.

“Do you remember what the woman said?” It was the Doctor.

After a pause, Xia Meng said emotionlessly, “The old master prefers silence. Not all the rooms are occupied. Stay in your rooms at night and don’t go anywhere in case you disturb the others.”

“That should be someone we might potentially disturb,” Jiang Cheng said.
