Chapter 604 - 196: The Mapping Method
Li Xin furrowed his brow, feeling somewhat uneasy. Such sights of Snake Skin and the drunk were an old occurrence to the experienced Shadow Owl, already took them for granted."Li Yinxiao, as soon as we received the street report, we immediately sealed off the scene," said Fan Yu, a squad leader of the city guard in his thirties, "Our place here is a rather high-end residential area in the West District, patrols are quite frequent, and the security used to be very good."
"Captain Fan, thank you for your cooperation, you’ve done a great job. This case will be handed over to us, the Shadow Owl, moving forward. I hope you haven’t leaked anything to the outside," Li Xin said.
Fan Yu eyed the young Silver Owl in front of him with caution. Anyone who could reach this Level in the Night Patrol, especially at a young age or being female, often proved to be more formidable than they appeared.
"Rest assured, I understand the rules. Upon seeing this situation, I knew something significant had occurred, and have already instructed my subordinates," he replied.
"Please handle the reporters outside, Captain Fan," Li Xin said.
"I’m good at that; leave it to me."
Seeing this young Silver Owl being so courteous, Fan Yu was happy to lend a hand.
Snake Skin Lu Shuimo took out five paper cranes. The paper cranes seemed to come alive, each jumping onto a person. Immediately, both Snake Skin and the paper cranes emitted a glow of Spiritual Ability, and Snake Skin’s Eye of Discovery was activated.
Drunk Yan Bei was observing all around, occasionally sniffing, soon noting the paper cranes on two Canon Law School trainees’ bodies were dimming, while the other three women’s paper cranes flapped their wings and flew towards the window.
"The clues on these two have been erased, leaving nothing behind, not even the souls," Lu Shuimo said, "The souls of these three women are still present; should we extract them and inquire?"
Li Xin nodded, and Lu Shuimo approached one of the women. He took out Spirit Ointment, skillfully drawing a Soul Searching Array, effortlessly releasing the soul of the deceased. A blue-gray female specter floated bewilderedly in the air.
"Li Yinxiao, you can ask three questions."
"Who killed you?" Li Xin asked.
The woman’s soul hesitated for a while, looking at the male corpse lying on the ground.
"Who killed those two?"
The woman’s soul shook her head in bewilderment, which meant she concluded after her death, the Harvester must have appeared.
"Do you have any wishes?" Li Xin asked.
The woman’s soul was somewhat bewildered, suddenly showing panic, "I don’t want to die."
But after answering the question, the soul slowly dissipated.
"Li Yinxiao, my paper cranes will trace the origins of these three women, though it likely will not be significant. Harvester must have known their souls were not providing useful intelligence."
Despite this, the souls of the other two women were also extracted. The situation was similar; all three were women of the Red Chamber, semi-selling art semi-selling bodies, aiming to earn big by serving two rich young masters, unexpectedly losing their lives, some were weak, others angry seeking revenge.
The reason it’s known the two were from the Divine Revelation Canon Law School was due to the badges found on them, a symbol of identity exclusive to the students of the Canon Law School, usually carried even without wearing uniforms, serving as proof of access to Divine Revelation.
Yan Bei came back from a round, shaking his head, "This killer is way too professional, damn it, leaving no tracks behind, the chaos at the scene was caused by those two Fallen going berserk, feasting, not from combat. Either Harvester vastly surpassed their strength, or that rattle is a tool to restrain action."
"Though those two Fallen were insane, at such moments their instincts are amplified, as members of Divine Revelation their combat prowess wouldn’t be lacking," Lu Shuimo said, "Li Yinxiao, how should we handle the bodies?"
"Bring them all back to the Shadow Owl for Old Tuo to investigate," Li Xin said.
This time it was not Hundred Martial Hall, not the Church Court, but personnel from Canon Law School.
The bodies were transported back to the Shadow Owl; Old Tuo conducted an examination. Li Xin and Meng Po watched as Old Tuo performed the autopsy, dissecting the bodies with skilled precision, exposing each layer, organs clearly visible, Old Tuo seemed to enjoying himself, occasionally explaining to them, prompting Li Xin to step out for air after watching for a while.
Lighting a cigarette, leaning against the wall, Li Xin always felt he hadn’t grasped the key point. Harvester killing for the sake of harvesting went unnoticed for so long, showing Harvester’s strength to be exceptionally high, beyond the reach Night Patrol could apprehend. Hidden Powers are unfair like that, strong overpowering the weak.
Amidst the swirling smoke, Li Xin’s mind raced. His approach of seeking evidence on the deceased was blocked, judging by Old Tuo’s demeanor, new findings seemed impossible, making it harder to preemptively apprehend the murderer.
Unless...create the murderer?
Though the murderer was small in stature and highly skilled, seemingly working alone, suggesting he couldn’t have known the acts beforehand. But how did he discover them?
Rattle.
The rattle wasn’t used to subdue the Fallen, but to uncover them.
Li Xin rolled the dice; it spun, yielding a valid outcome: a nine.
Li Xin took quick puffs, extinguished the cigarette, his mind suddenly illuminated—if he could simulate the effect of the Fallen, would it entice Harvester, to bait him? This tactic was known as baiting enforcement.
Li Xin’s heart raced; this plan was feasible, Harvester likely couldn’t resist, he wasn’t picky.
With this idea, Li Xin was inspired. Harvester’s actions in terms of timing and locations weren’t entirely without trace, records were comprehensive, using the most straightforward methods from the previous life, compiling lists, seeking similarities.
Li Xin promptly returned to the mortuary, encountering Meng Po at the door, even for an experienced Night Patrol like Meng Po, feeling disgusted, recognizing that the role of a coroner really isn’t suited for ordinary dispositions.
"Anything found?"
Meng Po shook her head, "Same as before, very clean. If it wasn’t for such methods, Harvester would have been captured long ago."
"Sister Meng, I need your help, to examine archives together," Li Xin said.
Meng Po paused, "Haven’t you already reviewed the archives multiple times?"
"I’ve made a new discovery; working together will expedite this. Do we have a map of Dragon Capital here?"
"We do," Meng Po nodded. Personal possession of the Dragon Capital map isn’t permitted, but the city guard and Night Patrol have access.
The two proceeded to the archives room, with Meng Po locating the scene of each file, and Li Xin recording them, marking them on the map.
After a while of busy work, the crime scenes marked in red emerged on the map, and with a mere glance from Li Xin, the fog lifted at once.
The people in this world rely too heavily on Hidden Powers, upon arriving he did as well, always seeking connections for judgment, of course, abilities are indeed useful. Yet, sometimes a sudden change of perspective yields different results.
